OUR WORK

A pioneering documentary for The Woodland Trust

Recovering the Rainforest, a Documentary by Bull & Wolf for The Woodland Trust.

The Brief

We created a critical documentary for The Woodland Trust uncovering the rich history of Temperate Rainforests in the UK. We dive into the disastrous past and present and share what might be possible for the future, through stunning imagery and a curated sound bed to immerse the viewer fully into the rainforest.

How we created this stand out film

The goal of this campaign is to have a single point of truth for those wanting to learn about Temperate Rainforests, the film sits on the Woodland Trusts website and will tour with its narrator, Sophie Pavelle’s book ‘Forget Me Not’ which explores the forgotten species of climate change.

For Bull & Wolf, this project was the culmination of many projects that came before it, we have worked with other entities to create content for a similar purpose but the scale and importance of this project provided an opportunity for us to leverage what we had done in the past to create something truly new.

What The Woodland Trust wanted to achieve

The Woodland Trust does a lot of work to restore these rainforests and is paving the way for the UK to encourage their growth and regeneration. This film will support that effort in being an informative and emotive piece that the Woodland Trust can refer to and share. They wanted the film to be stunning, immersive and groundbreaking.

Our unique approach

Our unique approach was to place ourselves in and amongst the rainforest to understand the unique perspectives that come within. Ultimately we decided that nothing about this film should feel human, these are forgotten places and humans have little knowledge of them. Converting this into a useable and tangible creative approach we pitched the idea of not shooting anything at human height, this perspective would alienate the viewers and create discomfort, something we wanted to do for the first 2 thirds of the film. The film was split into thirds, what we had, How we lost it and how we could get it back. These thirds were separated to evoke different emotions from the viewer culminating with a feeling of hope.

About The Woodland Trust

The guardians of the rainforest, The Woodland Trust is a UK-based charity dedicated to protecting and restoring woodlands. They work to ensure that forests and trees thrive for both people and nature. This means planting new trees, preserving ancient woodlands, and promoting the benefits of healthy forests.

Some (rather damp) BTS

It’s not a rainforest without a little bit of rain now is it? Our team braved the elements, watched thunderstorms roll in across Dartmoor and filmed in some of the most stunning locations in the whole of the UK. Wet, yes! Magical, most definitely.

Bull & Wolf produced a 10-minute nature documentary for us to tight deadline and were a joy to work with. They created a film exactly on brief, while injecting their own style, expertise and creative direction and were professional, efficient and friendly throughout. If you are looking for engaging, high-quality content I would highly recommend them.
